From clear morning sunrises to stunning evening sunsets, this is the season for making the most of the long summer days and exploring the region to your heart’s content. The beaches in both Northumberland and the Scottish Borders are a joy with long stretches of golden sand and no crowds.
You could spend a long summer day walking in the Cheviot hills or strolling along the river Till or the river Tweed, or you could take a trip on the 15″ gauge steam railway running between the villages of Heatherslaw and Etal or visit one stunning garden after another… the list of attractions is endless.
Summer is also a time for strolling on the lawn and through our landscaped grounds before enjoying a pre-dinner drink and a delicious meal to round off a perfect day. Dressed crab is a simple tasty starter in early summer, while asparagus, fennel and late season cauliflower come into their prime. Local raspberries and strawberries are plump and sweet and are perfect served with either balsamic vinegar and basil or, more traditionally, as an Eton Mess.
